Things I do well as a parent / caregiver

  1. Wait to deal with problems until I have cooled down.
  2. Say, “I love you.”
  3. Help my youth understand what the rules are.
  4. Spend fun time together as a family.
  5. Let my youth know what the consequences are for breaking rules.
  6. Give compliments and special rewards when my youth follows the rules.
  7. Follow through with consequences each time he or she breaks a rule.
  8. Give hugs.
  9. Attend parent-teacher evenings at school.
  10. Go to see my youth in sports, music, or other activities.
  11. Explain how chores should be done and when they must be finished.
  12. Spend special time one-on-one with my youth.
  13. Let my youth know the reason for the rules we have.
  14. Be supportive of my youth when he or she is upset.
  15. Have regular times for homework.
  16. Let my youth know I am proud when he or she accomplishes something hard.
  17. Work together with my youth to solve problems that come up at home.
  18. Try to see things from my youth’s point of view.
  19. Let my youth know what I expect regarding alcohol, tobacco, and drug use.
  20. Help my youth figure out how to deal with a difficult situation with friends or at school.
