Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the Strengthening Families Programme for?

Our programme is for anyone who is a parent, carer, foster parent, step parent, parenting partner or in a parenting role to young people aged 10-14. The Strengthening Families Programme invites any family to participate. We recognise that all parents have strengths that can be built upon. You can meet other parents to exchange your experiences and hopefully make new friends. The programme offers a relaxed and friendly environment where adults and young people can learn and have fun together!

What will I learn?

The programme offers support to parents and young people and helps them prepare for the teenage years. This is a time of transition for young people and can result in stress for them and their parents or caregivers. The programme has been shown to help young people to avoid problems with drugs and alcohol, resist peer pressure and communicate better with parents/caregivers. The topics covered include skills, which help parents and their children get on better and improve their quality of family life. Through discussions, fun games and activities, families solve problems together, learn about rules and consequences and explore ways to show love and support, strengthening family communication.

How long will the sessions last?

The programme is delivered in seven weekly sessions lasting two hours. Parents and young people meet separately for the first hour, and then spend the second hour together in family activities.

How much will it cost?

The Strengthening Families Programme is free to families who wish to attend.

Where will the programme be held?

The programme is held in places near to your home such as community centres, youth clubs or schools.

Will refreshments be provided?

Refreshments are always offered. This allows parents and caregivers, young people and facilitators time to relax and get to know each other.

Are there any childcare facilities for younger family members?

Support with child care is often provided either by the provision of a crèche or child minding service. The type and level of childcare is decided at local level depending on the area in which you live.

How will I get there? Is help provided?

There is frequently help with transport if it is required. However, this is decided at local level depending on the area in which you live.
